History

History at St Thomas'

At St Thomas’ CE Primary School, our History curriculum enables children to recall key facts and information about the past as well as developing their historical enquiry skills. Our teaching of History ensures pupils gain a secure knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world, so that children know more, remember more and understand more. Our children are encouraged to develop their research skills and their enquiry skills by developing their curiosity about the past so they have the skills required to explore their own interests and develop an enquiring nature. There are many opportunities for the curriculum to be enriched through multi-sensory, exciting experiences using visitors, visits, theme days and sources to bring history to life. These experiences enable children to develop a deeper understanding of the time periods studied and inspire the children. In addition, we are keen for children to learn about local history as it is important for children to develop a sense of identity through learning about the past and we want them to know how history has shaped their own lives. This is focused on during St Thomas’ Heritage Project, which is held across school annually.
