Music

Music at St Thomas'

Throughout Music at St Thomas C.E. Primary School, we aspire to provide opportunities for our pupils develop an appreciation of music, produce imaginative, interesting and original work and develop their skills as musicians through a creative and engaging curriculum supported by the Charanga Scheme of work. Our musical learning within this scheme is built around the Interrelated Dimensions of Music: pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture, structure and notation. These dimensions are at the centre of our learning. We aim to teach our pupils the important skills and techniques that assist them in developing their imagination, creativity and confidence when performing and discussing pieces of music and musicians.

Our pupils are given the opportunity to explore their ideas through their experiences, but also to explore and evaluate the work of other musicians. They will be encouraged to explore their own thoughts and feelings in response to music from different eras in history. As well as this, our pupils will continually develop their knowledge and confidence in a variety of techniques, such as listening, appraising, performing, improvisation and composition. Alongside the teaching of knowledge, skills and understanding within music, it is our aim to promote positive mental health and well-being in all pupils through the development of SMSC when listening and appraising selected pieces of music. As a school, we aim to ensure that all our pupils are aware that Music is available and accessible for everybody, and it can be enjoyable, thrilling and inspiring!
