Learning a language is 'a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures' (DfE, 2013). It enables children to deepen their understanding of the world, appreciate and celebrate difference, and provides a foundation for language learning in the future, both at KS3 and beyond. At St. Thomas', French is taught in KS2, although children across school are exposed to other languages as part of themed events and the sharing and celebrating of the languages spoken by our pupils and their families. French lessons combine the four key areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing with Intercultural Understanding, Knowledge about Language and Language Learning Strategies. It is our intention that by the time children leave St. Thomas', they have a genuine interest in languages, are able to communicate effectively using both spoken and written French, and are well-prepared to become lifelong language learners.
