At St Thomas’ we believe all children have the right to a broad and balanced curriculum allowing them the opportunities to tackle the challenges of the 21st century. Writing is a key skill which features across the curriculum and is essential both inside and outside the classroom. Our writing journey will be centred around ‘mastery foci’ where children are taught through high-quality texts, immersed in rich vocabulary learning environments and provided with various writing contexts to apply new skills so that new knowledge becomes embedded. We expect children to take pride in their writing outcomes and to be able to use a range of language which they can adapt to different writing genres. The mastery foci will be built on year-by-year allowing our children to evolve into fluent writers with a passion and thirst for new knowledge.
Our aim is to also create writing which is meaningful. We inspire our children through sharing an audience and purpose, promote discussions where children communicate effectively and provide opportunities where children can challenge and build upon the ideas of others. Our intention is that children become successful at writing accurately. Our approach focuses on children building their editing skills and work towards improving their writing independently.
At the heart of creating our curriculum we want to foster positive attitudes, inspire curiosity and innovate creativity. It is our responsibility to deliver a knowledge rich approach which caters to the needs of all learners so that each pupil has the opportunity to maximise their learning potential.
